ย้อนกลับไปเมื่อปี 2524 ถ้าเอ่ยชื่อ "เด็กหญิงวัลลี ณรงค์เวทย์" วัย 12 ปี นักเรียนชั้น ป. 5 โรงเรียนวัดโรงธรรม อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดสมุทรสงคราม คงไม่มีใครไม่รู้จัก เพราะหนังสือพิมพ์ได้นำเสนอเรื่องราวชีวิตของ วลี เด็กหญิงที่ต้องแบกรับภาระหนักหนาสาหัส ต้องวิ่งไปมาระหว่างโรงเรียนกับบ้านระยะทาง 8 กิโลเมตร ทุกๆ วัน เพราะต้องคอยดูแลป้อนข้าวป้อนน้ำให้กับแม่ที่ป่วยเป็นอัมพาต แถมยังช่วยดูแลยายที่ชราภาพจนไม่สามารถช่วยเหลือตัวเองได้อีกด้วย
